Hi everyone,

As the weather clears up, I think we are all feeling like there's an end in sight, whether you're in Med-4 and done classes, about to write your LMCC (GOOD LUCK), in Med-1 or 2 and just crossed another block exam off the list, or in Med-3 and have the start of your final year just around the corner.

No matter what, hang in there - you've got this!

Otherwise, same as usual: enjoy your weekly Murmur.

All the best,

Natasha Caminsky, MSS VP Internal 2016-2017

Immortalizing the Mortal: Art In the Service of Death

MSS Clubs

The meaning we give objects has an important basis in both culture and our direct experience with them. Thus, meaning may vary between individuals and at different times: we could just as easily be in a Shrine instead of a Museum, paying respect to the remains of those who suffered instead of using them to learn about disease. By corollary, depending on one's point of view an object may have more than one meaning, or level of understanding, at the same time.

The task proposed to the students who participated in this project was to consider another aspect of a skeleton mounted in 1935 at the McGill Maude Abbott Medical Museum. Their goal was to express in art - poetry, sketch, photography, or any other medium - a meaning to these bones other than the medical aspect implied in the writing of James Paget and the work of the McGill museologists - to tell their story and clothe them with flesh.

You are cordially invited to an exhibition of the artworks on Thursday, May 4, from 5-6:30pm in the Medical Museum, Strathcona Anatomy and Dentistry Building (3640 University Ave.), Room 2/38E. Please RSVP to to help us prepare refreshments. We hope to see you there!

(M) Apr 26 - Death Café – 7-9pm, Resto Vego, 1720 Rue St. Denis (Green Room downstairs) -
“A Death Café is a free, group-directed discussion of death and how your thoughts or experiences with death impact how you live your life. Sometimes the conversation circles around our fears of our own death, and, at other times, it is about grief over losses other than death. While no two Death Café events have ever been the same, we can guarantee that the conversation will: always be interesting, never be morbid, and often filled with lots of laughter. It is a discussion group rather than a grief support or counselling session, on a not for profit basis; in an accessible, respectful and confidential space.” Please RSVP to Kit Racette (

(S) Apr 26, 7-9pm – The Multiple Hats of Motherhood, click here for more information.
“How has the role of motherhood evolved in relation to emerging shifts in our understanding of gender roles? This conversation will consider whether motherhood can still be considered an institution. What are our individual and collective narratives of motherhood?”
