Hi everybody,

Hopefully it wasn't too much of a shock to your system to come back to reality today after the extended long weekend.

I'm at a bit of a loss for cheeky comments - I think my brain is fried to the max - so please exuse the shot preamble for this week's edition of the Murmur.

Just keep swimming/gunning/skutting/surviving/being you,

Natasha Caminsky, MSS VP Internal 2016-2017

P.S.: Thanks to everyone who took the time to vote in the MSS Elections!

Be a Vivo Mentor

MSS

Vivo Mentor is an online community that connects students interested in medicine with medical students and residents. We are a new venture started by two family medicine residents at the University of Toronto. We have already seen huge success and we would love to build on that with your help!

As medical students, you have an inherent sense of what it takes to get into medical school. You already made it! That being said, we provide you with additional resources to support you. We are currently paying $40 per hour as a token of appreciation for your hard work in helping these students. You can contribute through any of the following options:

• Critically review and provide feedback on medical school applications at your convenience from anywhere

• Conduct mock medical school interviews, including MMI, MPI, and traditional panel interviews. You can choose what you are comfortable with.

• Write high quality blog posts / articles related to medical school admissions (AND get paid for it!)

If you are interested, our sign up process is very easy. Simply go to:
https://vivomentor.com/pages/sign-up-to-be-a-mentor

We will follow-up with you for any questions you have and we will guide you every step of the way!

ACE Program - Buddy Match for future Clerks

MSS Clubs

Hey guys ! The ACE is organizing the first Buddy match for future clerks based on specialty interest. The goal is to pair Med 2s and Med 3s that share similar interest for a particular specialty. This way, mentors can provide guidance on electives, research opportunities and general tips for clerkship. If you are interested, please complete this very very short survey below to become a mentor or mentee. The match will be made by the end of May.

If you are a Med 2, register here to get a buddy - https://goo.gl/forms/CWTTmuPP6Ragzx2d2

Interventional radiology talk with Dr. Ali Bessissow

MSS Clubs

Are you ready to dispel the old adage that radiologists only “sit in dark rooms”? Come witness the scope of possibilities that radiology can offer to its patients.

Many of the current procedures performed in specialties including cardiology, vascular surgery, neurology and pulmonary medicine were pioneered by radiologists looking to push the boundaries of medical science, combining high-quality imaging with minimally-invasive techniques.

Not convinced? Don’t take my word for it! Come see Dr. Ali Bessissow get INTERVENTIONAL on April 27th @ the Thompson House.

Learn How to Teach! Recruiting 3rd and 4th year students for Sim Centre sessions on Practical Approaches to Sexuality and Gender

Faculty of Medicine

Dear 3rd and 4th Year Medical Students:

The WELL Office needs your sexual history taking expertise! We are holding our last simulation session of the year for second year students.

The learning objectives are to teach comfort in sexual history taking and practicing professionalism and respect. The case studies are varied and have been developed by the WELL Office, Students and the Equity and Diversity Office at McGill.

We are looking for professionals to guide the students by watching the simulated scenarios and providing feedback to the students.

You will receive a session on how to give feedback - a very useful skill for residency! A light lunch will be
provided.

We are only missing a couple of spots, so first come first serve!

(M) Apr 20, 4pm – Do physicians follow guidelines? The roles that scientific evidence plays in learning how to think like a doctor, 3647 Peel Street (Don Bates Seminar Room)

Dr. Bryn Lander from UBC: “I explore the roles that scientific evidence plays for attending physicians and trainees when caring for patients, analyse guideline adherence for this group of clinicians, and discuss potential relationships between referring to evidence and adhering to guidelines. I argue that clinical practice guidelines represent just one of several evidence sources that are used when making care decisions and that team members draw on different forms of evidence as they learn how to think like a doctor.”

(A/S) Apr 24-30 – Blue Metropolis Literary Festival (bilingual), please click here for schedule and ticket info.
Some of the themes this year include: "Hospitals and Specialised Schools", "LGBTQ Series", and "Who's Afraid of the Past? Who's Afraid of the Future?"

(S) Apr 26, 7-9pm – The Multiple Hats of Motherhood. Click here for more info.
“How has the role of motherhood evolved in relation to emerging shifts in our understanding of gender roles? This conversation will consider whether motherhood can still be considered an institution. What are our individual and collective narratives of motherhood?”
