The Sentinel (suicide prevention) training is back!

MSS Clubs

What is it about? The network of 15 “Sentinels” will be trained to identify signs of suicidal distress among their classmates/colleagues, and to help them access the right help and resources.

When? You have the choice between two different dates: Saturday May 20th 2017 (9am-5pm) or Saturday May 27th 2017 (9am-5pm)

We have 30 spots available (15 for each day).

Where? At the Annex

This year the Sentinel is offered for FREE! A lunch and coffee will be provided. A certificate will be delivered upon completion of this training.

You will find more information on the form itself.

How to Interpret CXRs: The Essentials for Clerkship

MSS Clubs

Does TCP or clerkship have you feeling nervous about reading X-Rays? Would you like to develop a practical approach to reading chest X-rays that will help you in clerkship and in your clinical careers? Back by popular demand, the MSS Radiology Interest Group (MRIG) in partnership with the Internal Medicine Interest Group (IMIG) have organized this year’s annual event, “How to Interpret CXRs: The Essentials for Clerkship”. This is a didactic session focused on providing students with a basic approach to reading chest X-Rays. This year our honorary guest speaker, Dr. Anne-Marie Brisson, will be leading the talk. Whether you've never read a chest X-Ray before or are looking for pointers to brush up on your skills, this event is open to all!

Hope to see you guys there!

A Place to Stand (2014)

Faculty of Medicine

16 May 2017 19:00 to 21:00
Arts Building : Moyse Hall, 853 rue Sherbrooke Ouest

Join us for a free screening and discussion of the movie A Place to Stand (2014). The film shows the amazing true story of how Jimmy Santiago Baca —a man with seemingly no future— became a celebrated teacher, poet, novelist, and screenwriter. Screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Dr. Balfour Mount, Emeritus Professor of Palliative Medicine, and Thupten Jinpa, Ph.D., Adjunct Professor, School of Religious Studies, McGill University, and a longtime English translator of the Dalai Lama. For more information: http://www.mcgill.ca/wholepersoncare/events/filmseries.

McGill Osler Society: Applications for the Executive Committee 2017-18

Faculty of Medicine

The McGill Osler Society is recruiting executives for the 2017-18 year. Prior involvement with the Osler Society is not an application requirement.

In the spirit of Sir William Osler, the Society aims to enrich the education of McGill students in medicine and other disciplines with lectures given by distinguished guest speakers, and with the presentation and discussion of papers concerning Humanities and the Social Sciences in Medicine. Furthermore, the Society puts a focus on developing philanthropy among medical students and on exploring enriching experiences that allow students develop into more well-rounded physicians. Our events include organizing the much anticipated annual Osler Banquet.

If you have a passion for the medical humanities, medical education, philanthropic events, or all of the above, we highly encourage you to get involved with the Osler Society, which is the oldest student society at McGill and is nearing its 100th year of existence!

Upcoming Arts and Humanities Events!

If you'd like to receive a weekly events newsletter by email, submit recommendations, or simply meet other med students interested in the arts and humanities, please join https://www.facebook.com/groups/mcgillmcham . All events are free unless marked otherwise. (A=art & performance; M=medicine-focussed; S=society)

(S) May 12 – “Stories of Justice and Hope”, 6-9pm – http://www.concordia.ca/cuevents/offices/vpaer/oce/2017/05/12/2017-05-12...

(A) May 14 – “A Place to Stand”, 7pm – Whole Person Care Film Series - http://www.mcgill.ca/wholepersoncare/events/filmseries
“Based on the memoir of the same name, A Place to Stand takes viewers into Jimmy’s past and present to uncover how the power of the written word lifted him from the violence and pain that had defined his early life. With powerful revelations from family, friends, and fellow inmates, as well as incredible insight into the early writings that first captured Jimmy’s imagination, audiences learn why it’s never too late to turn your life around – as long as you have a place to stand.”

(M) May 24 - Death Café – 7-9pm, Resto Vego, 1720 Rue St. Denis (Green Room downstairs)
“A Death Café is a free, group-directed discussion of death and how your thoughts or experiences with death impact how you live your life. Sometimes the conversation circles around our fears of our own death, and, at other times, it is about grief over losses other than death. While no two Death Café events have ever been the same, we can guarantee that the conversation will: always be interesting, never be morbid, and often filled with lots of laughter. It is a discussion group rather than a grief support or counselling session, on a not for profit basis; in an accessible, respectful and confidential space.” Please RSVP to Kit Racette (kitracette@yahoo.com)

Room for Rent

I have to leave behind my super sweet place on de Maisonneuve literally right across the street from the Glen.
It's a 2-storey apartment, and on the main floor there's a beautiful kitchen with a balcony, a huge bathroom with standing shower, jacuzzi tub and washer/dryer, a room that's currently my office but could be a dining room, a nice and bright living room, and one bedroom. The upstairs is a kind of loft area which is also gigantic, with its own bathroom with a tub, but no shower. There's also a big attic area for storage.
My brother's moving into the bedroom on the main floor so I'm looking for someone to take the loft area upstairs. He's a JMSB student and a pretty cool guy, and your landlords would be the nicest, most helpful and most reasonable people in the world (my parents).
We're asking $650 plus half of the utilities. The shared spaces are furnished, and there's the possibility of your bedroom being furnished too. If you're interested, know someone who might be, or want to come see it, let me know!
