Class of 2017 General Post-CaRMS Match Talk

MSS

Hi everyone!

I know you all have many questions regarding CaRMS and McGill's Matching results. This THURSDAY, March 23rd, from 6-8pm at the Palmer, we will have our general post-match talk. It is open specifically to all the classes, and is NOT specialty specific - so you'll get to hear about EVERY DISCIPLINE that my class matched into!

I strongly encourage you to come to hear about our stories and experiences with CaRMS. Also, take this as an opportunity to broaden your horizons and diversify your ranking list. We really want to make this useful for you, so this is your opportunity to ask your questions and reflect onto what kind of doctor you want to be when you grow up ;)
I look forward to seeing you!

SV

ps- I'm trying to get this recorded, but no guarantee.
pps- Due to budget constraint, there will be only food for thoughts.

MESS hosts: Ethical Challenges in Public Health w/ Dr. Weinstock

MSS Clubs

Remember all those great public health interventions we learned about in block A? They all sound good. They all seem to benefit the "greater good". Does this make them ethical?
Is mandatory TB treatment ethical? What about the act of reporting mandatory reportable diseases? Should vaccines be mandatory? Which ones? From a greater perspective, what comes into play when public health officials and/or lawmakers implement start thinking about new public health initiatives or policies? Is it also possible that global public health initiatives are partly used as a way to promote certain values by the countries who fund them?
Come hear (and talk) about the ethical challenges of public health from a world-renowned expert on the topic, Dr. Daniel Weinstock, ethicist, director of the McGill Institute for Health and Social Policy and James McGill professor at the Faculty of Law.
Bio --> https://www.mcgill.ca/law/about/profs/weinstock-daniel
Food will be served, as always.

Between Healer and Artist: a Conversation with Dr. Jaswant Guzder

MSS Clubs

Dr. Guzder is a member of the McGill psychiatry community and will share experiences that span her multi-faceted career as psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, researcher, and artist. Her professional accomplishments include: co-founding the Cultural Consultation Service, developing a fellowship program for family therapy, and supporting training in cultural competence and advancing it by integrating a global health perspective that is informed by interdisciplinary approaches. As an artist, Dr. Guzder’s work has been displayed nationally and internationally in several shows. In Dr. Guzder’s words, reflecting the tension and mutual creativity between the multiple spheres of her work: “I have always felt both divided and integrated in my work as a healer and my work as an artist.”

On Wed. April 5 at 6pm in Thomson House room 403, Dr. Guzder will be speaking upon her team projects in global health involving work that has been long-standing in India, Nepal, and, since 2005, in Jamaica. Her team’s work has involved a series of grant- and evidence-based work with children aged 8-12 years considered at high-risk for becoming implicated in cycles of violence, in response to a public health agenda as Jamaica has the fourth highest homicide rate in the world. In a second section of her presentation, she will share images of her artwork and reflections upon her artistic process. Her presentation will be combined with ample time for questions, discussion, and interaction.

Dr. Polina Sayess (New Hampshire Medical Society Council) is hosting a session about a technique (Motivational Interviewing) that can make this interaction more pleasant and effective. The objective of this presentation is to make the attendees well equipped to be able to incorporate this intervention right away in their clinical practice and potentially other relationships (e.g., family, friends and colleagues). Dr. Sayess is one of the co-founders of the American Academy of Family Physicians Lifestyle Medicine Member Interest Group. Incorporating lifestyle interventions in conventional medical setting is her passion.

CHAP opportunity - Phone Tree Medical Translation Services

MSS Clubs

Do you speak a language other than English or French? Are you interested in working with unilingual patients of Montreal? If so, Phone Tree Medical Translation Services needs YOUR help! We are currently working primarily with the Montreal Children's Hospital ER, CLSC Parc-Extension, and several other clinics.

Here are the possible ways that you can help:
1. Providing on-site interpretation during appointments.
2. Interpreting by phone for the MCH ER
3. Making follow-up calls to see if patients have any questions/concerns.
4. Documenting your interaction/findings on the patient's chart
5. Serving as a cultural broker if needed.
6. Translating health promotional material.

This is an excellent way to get involved in the community and is a HUGE learning experience, as you will be exposed to the complex medical and social situations of immigrant/refugee patients. Your contribution will be greatly appreciated by both the patients and the health care professionals.
Please contact Rajam Raghunathan (rajam.raghunathan@mail.mcgill.ca) or Janane Maheswaran (janane.maheswaran@mail.mcgill.ca) if you would like to get involved. We look forward to hearing from you!

Sometimes the conversation circles around our fears of our own death, and, at other times, it is about grief over losses other than death.
