Election Position Descriptions


President


The DSS President position combines many privileges and responsibilities that include the following:

Setting dates for meetings of the DSS and the faculty liaison committee and moderate such meetings (4 meetings each)
Delegate certain responsibilities to other members of the council
Represent the DSS in the Faculty Council meetings (usually 4/year)
Meet with the financial sponsors along with the VP finance
Make sure that events are well planned and organized
Introduce new ideas that you believe will improve the lives of the dental students (ie. website, alumni network, etc.)
Along with those tasks comes a privilege to the president: you get the chance of meeting the students in all four years; you meet with the Dean, associate deans and rest of the staff on a regular basis; you get to work on exciting new projects that you might not have experienced otherwise and much more.

SSMU DSS Representative


On behalf of the Dentistry Faculty of McGill, the SSMU Dentistry Representative sits on the SSMU council as a councillor along with members of the executive council. This governing body has the power to induce changes to many aspect of the undergraduate student life at McGill. For example, councillors are encouraged to bring forth to council motions about issues that are relevant to students at McGill they would like to see change, or motions to change any aspect of council that they feel would improve its operation. The council operates very similar to the House of Commons with Speakers chairing each bi-monthly meeting. It is an exciting experience filled with heated political discussions!

Social Representative


As a DSS social rep you are responsible for planning the annual social events we look forward to so much. These include: the Big Sib/Lil Sib Dinner; the Tremblant trip; and the Welcome Event. You can also take the initiative to plan other fun activities that you know people will enjoy. All of our events have been a tradition for quite some time and require much planning, organisation, energy and originality. If you know how to throw a good party, this position is for you.

*Note: candidates may choose to campaign as a team however voting will be done on an individual basis, therefore the nominees may not be elected together

Length of term: 1 year


Sports Representative


As a DSS Sports Representative, you are responsible for: organizing Intramural teams for Fall and Winter based on student interest as well as faculty and staff interest, helping organize the annual Outreach Run Fundraiser, Tremblant sports activities and the scheduling of them. Other initiatives to consider are drop in sports, student/faculty wellness activities and encouraging healthy living and good posture for dental students. Any other activities or initiatives that include the participation from all years (and residents) to unite the dental faculty are highly encouraged!

VP Communications


The VP Communications is the liaison between the McGill dental students and any outside companies, faculties, schools, organizations, or individuals who wish to contact them.

Responsibilities include: forwarding, monitoring and filtering all emails and spam that go to every class listserv as well as the entire DSS litserv, organizing, updating, and distributing the DSS handbook/agenda/phonebook each school year, objectively organizing the Big Sib-Little Sib list and working with the social reps on the Sib Dinner, updating the DSS website and facebook page, making early contact with incoming students as a DSS ambassador, creating and maintaining good working relationships with sponsors. This position can be highly variable depending on what is put into it; creativity and initiative are a must!

VP Finance


VP Finance is a position that requires a lot of organization. They must stay on top of the DSS finances, checking monthly statements and ensuring payment of Visa bills. They must keep receipts and records of all purchases done by or on behalf of the DSS. The VP Finance has an important role in all activities planned by the DSS by setting a budget and ensuring all payments are made. They are responsible for interactions with McGill with regards to insurance, audit, and proof of enterprise. They are also responsible for ensuring continued sponsorship of the DSS in order to maintain a yearly operating budget.

VP Internal


The VP Internal is the right hand of the president and completes any tasks which may be required if the president is ever unavailable. The VP Internal steps in as his/her representative and is also responsible for representing and voicing the opinions of the student body in faculty meetings. The VP Internal is responsible for providing refreshments for each DSS meeting, within the budget that is determined with the VP Finance, writes down the meeting minutes to distribute to the council and is the main coordinator for producing the annual DSS yearbook. The VP Internal and as such the position is very dynamic; you will get out of it what you put in.
