Medical Students' Society of McGill University (MSS) Executive Council

The Medical Students' Society (MSS) represents the interests of students working towards the M.D.,C.M. degree and enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine of McGill University.  It serves to promote the views of its members in all dealings with the Faculty of Medicine of McGill University, McGill University, and the community at large.

The MSS serves to encourage interaction between its members and to disseminate information pertinent to the academic, professional and cultural enrichment of all its members.  Furthermore, the MSS coordinates and promotes the formation and functioning of Society organizations, clubs, and committees.

The General Council of the Medical Students' Society of McGill University (MSS) is the governing body whose role is to legislate and execute all regulations and enactments of the Society. The General Council transacts all business and engages in all affairs of the Society in the name of the Society.

The Executive Council consists of the Officers of the Society, all of whom are also members of the General Council. Also, each medical class elects its own Class Council.

The General Assembly, composed of all active members of the Society, has full authority over the Society. Thus, the General and Executive Councils are bound by all decisions made by a General Assembly.

A detailed description of the General Assembly, General Council, Executive Council and the four Class Councils can be found in Article 4 of the MSS Constitution (available online).

The Medicine Senator represents medical students on the McGill Senate, which is the highest governing academic body of the university, superseded only by the Board of Governors, who decide on finances. The Senate is charged with reviewing and passing any policies that have an impact on the academic life of students. This includes policies on purely academic things such as assessment, evaluation, and plagiarism, but also extends to things like student well-being, mental health, student rights, and the overall academic vision for the university. Senate is where new programs are founded, and things like campus-wide sexual assault policies are debated. Senate also oversees many subcommittees, which handle things like the formulation of new policies. Every Senator is expected to attend Senate meetings, to sit on at least two subcommittees, and to attend the weekly Student Senator Caucus. In addition, the Medicine Senator sits on the MSS Council and is expected to report  to the MSS Council and to their constituents, and should regularly consult medical students and ask for their feedback and opinions on issues. Finally, the Medicine Senator, working with the SSMU Representative, should act as a resource person for students who need help navigating the student government and the administration.

The MSS Wellness Representative is an the official liaison between the MSS and the MSW.  The Wellness Rep is a non-voting member of the MSS General Council and is the go-to person for anything wellness related.  In addition, the Wellness Representative attends and is a voting member at the Faculty's Curriculum Committee and New Curriculum Implementation Committee.  The Wellness Rep mandate includes advocating and promoting student wellness on issues that may include workload, vacation and inclusion of wellness activities in the new curriculum.

The rationale for the position is that this student representative's only mandate is to advocate for student wellness.  This is in stark contrast to the other members of the MSS sitting on these committees who must balance a variety of influences as an advocate for students in all aspects of their education.  This position would improve upon the status quo as the current MSW VP Academic is not an elected representative, despite advocating for wellness on these curricular committees.  Finally, this position will formalize the relationship between the MSS and the MSW.  This relationship will hopefully lead the culture change that is needed to improve medical student wellness.

Laurence Gariépy-Assal (2015-2016)

The VP Wellness position was created in 2015.
