Tips on how to register, reduce costs and obtain funding for attendance/organization:

All information on registration and scheduling are located on the American Association of Family Practice website: http://www.aafp.org/events/national-conference.html. You must become a member (free for students) to register for the conference. The AAFP has a scholarship program available to first-time attendees to help cover costs of attending. There are many opportunities for free food throughout the event.

Strengths and weaknesses of the conference OR A complete report on the initiative:

This conference is a great opportunity for anyone interested in family medicine, in the US or Canada. There are many educational and thought provoking workshops on topics including career planning, health policy and advocacy, leadership development, and practice management. In addition, there are hands-on procedural skills sessions and musculoskeletal clinics. The other main aspect of the conference is the Expo Hall, which includes booths with representation from many residency programs in the US, employment agencies, and research expositions. This is a wonderful opportunity for medical students considering family medicine residency in the US to explore the wide variety of programs that exist, network with current residents and faculty, and learn more about what programs have to offer in an easily accessible way. In addition, there are several social gatherings to interact with other medical students with similar interests, and get to know residents in a more relaxed atmosphere.
The only weakness of this conference is that there is so much helpful and intriguing programming in three short days that it is impossible to do and see everything that interests you.

    Location of the event:

Tips on how to register, reduce costs and obtain funding for attendance/organization:

Unfortunately, the conference has a fixed rate for students and its quite expensive ~$420. However, to obtain funding, it may be possible to ask the physician for some assistance using research funding.

Strengths and weaknesses of the conference OR A complete report on the initiative:

The CDA’s 91st Annual Conference is Canada’s largest conference for dermatologists and dermatology researchers.

Strengths: 1) relatively smaller conference than the American counterpart so one can get to know many trainees and physicians 2) many excellent educational sessions 3) the conference can take place in cities nearby so it would be feasible to go.

Weaknesses: 1) smaller conference compared to conferences in USA and if budget is very limited one may opt to go to AAD instead if one had to go to only one conference. 2) registration fees are very expensive to students and students have to be sponsored by a CDA member.

    Strengths/Weaknesses:

    - Great opportunity to meet people from across the country with an interest in pediatrics

  5. Canadian Neurological Sciences Federation's 51st Congress

    Name of the applicants/organizers:

    Jean-Pierre Falet

    Start of Event:

    Location of the event:

Tips on how to register, reduce costs and obtain funding for attendance/organization:

    - Registration is online on the CNSF website. You can choose in advance which specific course/activity you wish to attend. Lunch is included for most of the days.
    - Unfortunately there is no reduced pricing for medical students who wish to attend only one day of the conference. It may be cheaper for you to attend the entire conference because then you get the reduced medical student pricing.
    - Funding is available through the MSS or through your supervisor, if applicable.

Strengths and weaknesses of the conference OR A complete report on the initiative:

    Strengths:
    - The variety of topics presented will please anyone interested in neurology, neurosurgery, rehabilitation medicine, or any other fields that relate to the neurosciences.
    - There is a mix of resident courses, speaker sessions, as well as poster/podium presentations which allow you to learn, network, and see the latest research all in one conference. The quality of the presentations is really excellent.

    Weaknesses:
    - No medical student pricing for single-day attendance

I would recommend this conference for anyone interested in neurology (both adult or pediatrics) or neurosurgery. It is truly an excellent learning experience and an opportunity to network with future colleagues from all over Canada.

  6. Canadian Pediatric Society 93rd Annual Conference

    Name of the applicants/organizers:

    James Morse

    Start of Event:

    Mon, 2016/06/20

    End of Event:

    Sat, 2016/06/25

    Location of the event:

    Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

Tips on how to register, reduce costs and obtain funding for attendance/organization:

Registration is done online with a discount for medical students.
Airplane tickets are more expensive if bought late, and so should be bought 3-6 months in advance if possible.
Hotels are expensive in Charlottetown; Bed and breakfasts are cheaper, and AirBNBs and the like are even cheaper, especially if staying with a friend.
Except for travel to and from the airport, everything is generally within walking distance.

Strengths and weaknesses of the conference OR A complete report on the initiative:

The conference had some great presentations such as the journal club and teaching on pediatric poisoning. However, some presentations were slightly lacking, reflecting the small size of the population of Canada as opposed to conferences in the United States. As this is a pediatric conference, the dress code is not especially strict, and so few men wore suits, and women did not wear suits. The conference was a great event to socialize as everyone was open to conversation and the atmosphere was very friendly.

    - Awesome presentations with well known ophthalmologists, comity chair members and Faculty.
    - Great variety of topics
