The Believe Your Patient Initiative

About the club

The Believe Your Patient Initiative aims to address a harmful phenomenon in healthcare that is all too common but that has long been ignored — the invalidation of patient symptoms by physicians. When labs and tests fail to explain certain symptoms, patients are often told it’s “all in their head” and that they simply need a psychiatrist. To be suffering yet not taken seriously is traumatic and frequently results in isolation and hopelessness. In addition to the psychological consequences of being made to feel crazy by a physician, dismissal of patient symptoms can also lead to delayed diagnoses and a broken relationships with the healthcare system. Certain populations are at higher risk of being invalidated or dismissed by their physicians, including women, whose symptoms are often written off as being anxiety-related, and those with “invisible illnesses” such as chronic pain. The Believe Your Patient Initiative aims to raise awareness on the prevalence and consequences of symptom invalidation, empower patients who have been affected, and advocate for better education of medical students and healthcare providers in empathetic communication.
