About the Club
Laparoscopic surgery has been used for decades, mostly as a diagnostic tool. However, in more recent history, its benefits as a modern therapeutic and surgical tool, are being investigated. For instance, SA Antoniou et al. (2015) explain that minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has now become the gold standard for cholecystectomies, surpassing traditional open surgery (TOS). Research shows that patients who undergo MIS experience less stress and pain as a result of the surgery and require less time to recover, compared to TOS [1].
Taking into consideration the emergence of this surgical technique, we anticipate that most students at McGill, interested in pursuing careers in surgery, will most likely incorporate MIS in their future practices. Thus, the goal of the Association of Minimally Invasive Surgery (AMIS) is to introduce, expose, and promote the various applications of MIS in different surgical and clinical medical fields.
