Hi everyone,
I am writing to clarify where things currently stand, outline how you can participate as individuals, and inform you that we are finalizing a coordinated plan with the FMEQ and the other Quebec medical student associations tomorrow evening. We will circulate the finalized plan and timeline of our collective actions after that meeting.
Medias:
If you are approached by the media, please coordinate with me, Maïa or Adam before responding. A misstep in an interview or on social media could follow you into CaRMS and/or your career, and we want to avoid that at all costs. As per the FMEQ, student association members (like members of the MSS) are protected by their status, since we are not sharing personal opinions but rather those of the students we represent.
We also wish to emphasize our solidarity with the specialists of the FMSQ and family doctors of the FMOQ. They are not only our teachers but also our future colleagues, and the issues they are raising will ultimately affect us as well. Supporting them is a way of recognizing the value of their work and the conditions under which they practice. At the same time, our shared objective is clear: for negotiations to conclude as quickly as possible so that teaching can resume without further disruption.
Next Steps:
We are aligning a province-wide approach that is respectful, clear, and effective. One option under discussion is a synchronized rally: McGill and UdeM together in Montreal while students at other faculties gather simultaneously on their campuses. Several reporters who interviewed us this week have already indicated interest in covering such an event, which would help ensure the public understands the educational impact at stake. We are also preparing to collect anonymous testimonials about how the strike is affecting you; these would be used on our channels, and the most impactful ones may be shared with journalists to ground coverage in concrete student experiences. Finally, we are structuring a letter campaign to the Minister; the MSS will provide a simple template and platform so participation is quick and broad.
If you want to contribute now, you can reply to this email with suggestions of impactful advocacy methods you think we should include. You will receive the full plan and timelines tomorrow evening.
For the most recent context, here is my recent CBC interview: https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/video/9.6906845.
Thank you for your patience and professionalism. I will be back tomorrow with the finalized steps.
Best,
Ryan Kara
